Humanities and Social Sciences Department
Zelentsova Svitlana Zelentsova Svitlana graduated with honors from Luhansk National University named after Taras Shevchenko with specialty in History, English language and literature. In 2010, she defended her candidate’s thesis in historical sciences, and in 2014 she received the academic title of associate professor of the department of Luhansk State Medical University. She has worked in positions starting with the senior laboratory technician of the department of LDUVS named after E.O. Didorenko to associate professor of the department of KMU. She has 60 publications, including 8 educational and methodological recommendations and manuals for foreign students in English. She has been working with foreign students for more than 14 years. Performs the functions of the head teacher of the department of public health and microbiology. She has became the head of the department since 25 August 2025. She is a teacher of: Professional English for medical workers, Business foreing language, Hastory of Ukraine for foreing students.

The material and technical equipment of the department meets the standards and requirements for departments of higher educational medical institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation. There is a complete set of methodological instructions and recommendations for all disciplines taught at the department. All academic disciplines of the department are fully equipped with methodological developments, methodological guidelines for practical work, and independent work of students from various specialties. Work programs in all specialties are carried out in full. Employees of the department regularly take advanced training courses, improving teaching methods.
The topic of the scientific work of the department is “Cross-cultural communication as a component of the professional training of a modern specialist in the medical field” (state registration number: 0121U113784). Teachers of the Department take an active part in internation conferences and symposia. During the existence of the department, its employees presented more than 80 scieific reports, published more than 70 scientific articles, including scientific professional editions of category “B” and in international publications, Web of science, etc. According to the results of the scientific work, a selective educational courses “Cross cultural communication” and “Dialogue of cultures in the work of a specialist in the medical field” for medical students was developed and implemented. Scientific and pedagogical employees of the department teach courses “Philosophy”, “Pedagogy” and “English for professional purposes” for postgraduate students. The scientific student group “Cultural Portal” is actively working at the department (supervisor – Shevchuk Iryna, senior lecturer). It unites young people from different countries who are students of the Kyiv Medical University, introduces young people to the traditions, customs, language and foundations of Ukrainian statehood, expands their outlook and influences the formation of upbringing and cultural values. Topics of the meetings: “Non-verbal communication in different cultures”, “Healthy nutrition in different national cuisines”; “Ethical problems of medicine”, “Mental health in times of war and terrorism”, “Alternative medicine”, etc. (2023/2024 academic year). Topics of the meetings in 1st semester 2024/2025 academic year: “Media Literacy”, “Collectivistic VS Individualistic Culture”.
The history of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines dates back to 1992. It was established on the basis of: 1992–1994 – Department of Sociology (Head: Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor Iryna Vasylivna Vasylieva); 1992–1995 – Department of Languages (Head: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Yuliia Oleksiivna Tomina); 1993–1995 – Department of Economics (Head: Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor Hryhorii Ivanovych Havrylenko); 1992–1995 – Department of Physical Education and Health (Head: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Volodymyr Viktorovych Makarenia); 1996–2007 – Department of Physical Education and Health (Head: Halyna Mykolaivna Rybalko); 1996–2006 – Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines (Head: Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor Viktor Ivanovych Pervak); 2007–2020 – Department of Foreign Languages and Social and Humanitarian Disciplines with a course in Physical Education (Head: Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Tamara Viktorivna Kiryk). In August 2020, the Department of Foreign Languages and Social and Humanitarian Disciplines was reorganized according to Order No. 135/1. As a result, two departments were created: the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines and the Department of Ukrainian and Latin Languages. From August 2020 to August 2025, the Department of Ukrainian and Latin Languages was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Tamara Viktorivna Kiryk. The first Head of the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines (2020–2021) was Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor Oleh Anatoliiovych Aharkov. From July 2021, the Department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Nataliia Valeriivna Nykonenko. In 2022–2025, the Head of the Department was Candidate of Philological Sciences Iryna Oleksandrivna Filatenko. In August 2025, the Department of Ukrainian and Latin Languages was dissolved, and its educational components were transferred to the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines. Since August 25, 2025, the Department has been headed by Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Svitlana Mykolaivna Zelentsova. Faculty Members (1992–2025): Aharkov O.A., Babaievska T.H., Bezotosnyi M.T., Bilozorov V.O., Bykova K.S., Boholiubova M.M., Since 2000, the Department has annually hosted International Scientific Conferences on the topic: From 2006 to 2025, the Department operated a Laboratory “Formation of the Personality of a Student – Future Doctor,” within which scientific meetings, student surveys, the implementation of modern media-education technologies, and the publication of textbooks, methodological manuals, and monographs were carried out annually. Since 2007, the Department has been home to the student scientific society “Genius loci.” Since 2021, the English-speaking student scientific society “Cultural Portal” has been active, bringing together young people from different countries studying at Kyiv Medical University. These societies acquaint students with the traditions, customs, language, and foundations of Ukrainian statehood, broaden their worldview, and contribute to the development of cultural values and personal maturity.
