The teachers of the department work with students of Ukrainian-speaking and English-speaking specialties such as: “Medicine”, “Dentistry”, “Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy”, and “Рsychology” for Ukrainian-speaking students The material and technical equipment of the department meets the standards and requirements for departments of higher educational medical institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation. There is a complete set of methodological instructions and recommendations for all disciplines taught at the department. All academic disciplines of the department are fully equipped with methodological developments, methodological guidelines for practical work, and independent work of students from various specialties. Work programs in all specialties are carried out in full. Employees of the department regularly take advanced training courses, improving teaching methods.
The topic of the scientific work of the department is “Cross-cultural communication as a component of the professional training of a modern specialist in the medical field” (state registration number: 0121U113784). Teachers of the Department take an active part in internation conferences and symposia. During the existence of the department, its employees presented more than 80 scieific reports, published more than 70 scientific articles, including scientific professional editions of category “B” and in international publications, Web of science, etc. According to the results of the scientific work, a selective educational courses “Cross cultural communication” and “Dialogue of cultures in the work of a specialist in the medical field” for medical students was developed and implemented. Scientific and pedagogical employees of the department teach courses “Philosophy”, “Pedagogy” and “English for professional purposes” for postgraduate students. The scientific student group “Cultural Portal” is actively working at the department (supervisor – Shevchuk Iryna, senior lecturer). It unites young people from different countries who are students of the Kyiv Medical University, introduces young people to the traditions, customs, language and foundations of Ukrainian statehood, expands their outlook and influences the formation of upbringing and cultural values. Topics of the meetings: “Non-verbal communication in different cultures”, “Healthy nutrition in different national cuisines”; “Ethical problems of medicine”, “Mental health in times of war and terrorism”, “Alternative medicine”, etc. (2023/2024 academic year). Topics of the meetings in 1st semester 2024/2025 academic year: “Media Literacy”, “Collectivistic VS Individualistic Culture”.
In August 2020, the Department of Foreign Languages and Social Sciences and Humanities was reorganized in accordance with Order № 135/1. The result of this reorganization was the creation of two departments: the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Department of Ukrainian and Latin. The first head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities (2020-2021) was Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor Oleg Anatolyevich Agarkov. Oleg Anatoliyovych was born on January 18, 1980 in the city of Zaporizhia. He graduated from Zaporizhia State University (qualification “sociologist”), later at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute of Public Administration of the National Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine (qualification “Master of Public Administration”). He defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Sociological Sciences (2006) and Doctor of Political Sciences (2013). From 2004 to 2019 he worked as a teacher, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor, head of the department, dean in higher education institutions of Ukraine. He participated in the development of standards of higher education, a scholarship holder of the Verkhovna Rada scholarship for the most talented young scientists of Ukraine, a member of the board of the All-Ukrainian Association of Political Sciences, acts as a supervisor and official opponent of dissertations. From July 2021, the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities is headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Natalia Nikonenko. Natalia Valeriyivna was born on January 5, 1976 in the city of Vinnytsia. She graduated from Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University named after Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky (specialty “Ukrainian language and literature, English language”). In 2005 at the Kyiv National Linguistic University, she defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences on “Methods of organizing independent work of students in English using a professional language portfolio.” In 2013, she received the academic title of “Associate Professor”. Author of more than 100 scientific works, including sections of monographs, textbooks, Ukrainian-English dictionaries of psychological and legal terms, articles in professional journals, methodological developments. Developer of the European Language Portfolio for Economists (2004) – the first comprehensive structured portfolio in Ukraine, the purpose of which is to systematize information on the level of mastery of foreign language competencies of future and practicing economists. He is currently working on developing a professional portfolio for healthcare professionals. Since September 2022 a candidate of philological sciences Iryna Filatenko has been heading the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities. She was born in 1977 February, 17th in Donetsk city. Iryna Filatenko graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (speciality "Ukrainian language and literature, Russian language and literature"). In 2003 in the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv she defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences. From 2003 to 2016 she worked as a junior researcher, a researcher, as an assistant teacher and a teacher in the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; from 2016 to 2020 she worked as a senior teacher of the Preparatory Department for international students at Private Higher Education Establishment “Kyiv Medical University”; and from 2020 to 2022 – as an associate professor at the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at PHEE ”Kyiv Medical University”. Iryna Filatenko is an author of over 60 scientific works. She acts as an official opponent of dissertations for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
