Meeting of the Scientific Club of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy

On November 18, the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy transformed into a true intellectual hive, hosting the latest session of the Scientific Club. The day was dedicated to an in-depth analysis of how drugs interact with each person’s unique organism—a key to individualized therapy.

The session began with a discussion of the influence of external and internal biological factors on drug action.

Violeta Sukhina explored how polyphenols and flavonoids affect the absorption and activity of drugs in the body. She highlighted the potential interactions between diet, dietary supplements, and pharmacotherapy, emphasizing that even seemingly “harmless” natural components can either enhance or block the effects of prescribed medications.

Next, Viktoria Bulakh focused on a specialized topic: the impact of oral microbiota on the bioavailability of plant components in dental medications. She stressed that even local treatments for teeth and gums depend on the “balance of forces” within the oral cavity.

Sofia Shapoval examined the influence of genetic polymorphism on transporter proteins for antidepressants and antipsychotics. She demonstrated how minor genetic differences can affect how the brain responds to psychiatric medications, explaining why treatment effectiveness often requires individualized selection.

Andriy Sosnyuk presented research on the role of gut microbiota in the biotransformation of plant extracts. He showed how the billions of bacteria residing in the gut can either activate or completely degrade natural components of herbal drugs, dramatically altering their effectiveness.

Finally, Dmytro Ivanov analyzed drug elimination as a key stage in therapy individualization. He emphasized that elimination is a decisive variable. Accurate knowledge of the rate at which a drug is cleared from the body is essential to prevent accumulation and the development of toxic effects, forming the fundamental basis for establishing a safe and effective dose.

The Scientific Club session once again confirmed that pharmacology is a dynamic and fascinating science. The student presenters demonstrated their readiness to engage in research in the field of personalized pharmacotherapy, which represents the future of medicine.
