Recognition

Information on the recognition of KMU diplomas outside of Ukraine

Diploma recognition, also known as nostrification, is the official process of validating a Ukrainian educational qualification for study, work or professional licensing in another country. It confirms that the qualification meets the standards of the country in which the KMU graduate is based. This process involves evaluation and documentation, such as the diploma and transcripts, and sometimes exams. It is often handled by a ‘Recognition Centre’ and ensures equivalence, enabling career and academic mobility.

What It Is

  • Official confirmation: This is an official document stating that your Ukrainian diploma/degree is equivalent to a specific level in the country in which the KMU graduate is located.

How It Works (General Steps)

  1. Authenticate: To begin the process of having a higher education document (KMU diploma) recognized in another country, the diploma must first be legalized (apostilled). To start this process, contact the Embassy of Ukraine in your current country of residence. KMU can also assist with this. If you have started the procedure for nostrification of your KMU diploma in another country, you can always contact us for support (clarifications, additional documents, etc.) at the following contacts:

  1. Identify the authority: Find the relevant body in your target country (e.g. the Ministry of Education, an ENIC-NARIC center or a designated agency).
  2. Gather documents: Collect your original and legalized (apostilled) KMU diploma and diploma supplement, along with their translations and copies of your passport.
  3. Submit application: Complete the online or paper application form and submit it with the supporting documents.
  4. Evaluation: The authority will assess the content of your studies. Also at the request of our graduates, the KMU can also provide the following documents:

– An archival certificate for all disciplines (including topics and hours),

– A certificate confirming the accreditation of the educational programme

– Evidence of the availability of a KMU license to conduct educational activities

and so on.

  1. Possible extra steps: You may need to pass exams or take further courses to bridge gaps.
  2. Receive the decision: Receive the official document recognizing your KMU diploma.

Key Bodies

  • ENIC-NARIC: The European Network of Information Centres / National Academic Recognition Information Centres network supports recognition across Europe.
  • Ministries of Education: Often responsible for the formal recognition process in many countries (e.g., Ukraine).

Recognition of your higher education diploma

If you hold a Ukrainian higher education qualification, you can present it to the National Academic Recognition Centre of the country in which you wish to study or work to obtain formal recognition – which will be confirmed by documents issued by the Recognition Centre.

Contact details for national centres in the EU can be found here:

The European Commission has developed Guidelines on fast-track recognition of Ukrainian academic qualifications to support Member States in the recognition of academic qualifications, including the recognition of credits where students left Ukraine with unfinished studies.

United Kingdom:

Recognition of a foreign higher education diploma in the United Kingdom is decentralised and purpose-driven. The UK does not operate a universal nostrification system. Instead, recognition depends on why the qualification is being assessed: employment, study, immigration, or professional licensing.

UK ENIC is the central reference point, while professional bodies retain final authority for licensing.

USA:

  • ECFMG Certification is the standard for recognizing foreign medical diplomas in the U.S., requiring primary-source verification of credentials directly from the issuing medical school. International medical graduates (IMGs) must pass USMLE steps, meet communication/clinical skills requirements, and verify their final diploma and transcripts to qualify for residency and Step 3.
  • Key Aspects of ECFMG Recognition:
  • Primary-Source Verification: ECFMG validates credentials directly with the issuing school to ensure authenticity, rather than accepting copies from the applicant.
  • Requirements for Certification: Applicants must complete an Application for ECFMG Certification, submit final medical diplomas and transcripts, pass required exams (USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK), and meet clinical/communication skills requirements.
  • Documentation: Documents not in English require certified translations. The verification process, including transcripts for transferred credits, must be completed directly with the school.
  • ECFMG Certification Verification Service (CVS): This service provides proof of certification to medical licensing authorities, hospitals, and residency programs, which is required for employment.
  • Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS): For applicants applying to residency, ECFMG automatically transmits the status report.
  • Accreditation Standards: ECFMG, along with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), emphasizes that medical schools must meet recognized accreditation standards.
  • Pathway to Practice: Passing these standards is necessary for IMGs to enter ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs in the U.S..
