Department of Public Health and Microbiology

Head of the Department: Olena Viktorivna Baieva, Manager, Doctor of Biological Sciences (D.Sc.), Professor.

O. V. Baieva graduated from Chernivtsi State University (1997) and Cherkasy Academy of Management (2002). In 1991, she defended her doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Experimental Medicine (Leningrad) on the topic ‘Functions of the Immune System Under Stress in Early Postnatal Ontogenesis.’

She is a member of the all-Ukrainian public organization ‘All-Ukrainian Association of Chief Physicians.’

Author of more than 480 scientific works, including monographs, inventions, and study guides. Under her direct leadership, academic and professional training for specialists in medical and pharmaceutical management was introduced in Ukraine. She has been heading the department since 2017.

The department has developed and completely updated a comprehensive set of teaching and learning resources for all courses offered. All instructional materials are available in two languages—Ukrainian and English.

The department’s faculty and staff are constantly working on the development and publication of:

• textbooks and teaching guides;
• instructional guidelines for practical and laboratory work;
• materials for organizing independent study for students and part-time students;
• printed workbooks (in particular, workbooks on microbiology, virology, and immunology have been published for students majoring in 222 “Medicine”: Section I “Morphology and Physiology of Microorganisms” and Section II “General and Special Virology”).

The database of test questions is systematically updated to effectively prepare higher education students for the EIT integrated licensing exams (“Krok-1” and “Krok-2”).

The educational process at the department is constantly being improved through the implementation of modern pedagogical technologies and interactive teaching methods (training sessions, business games, and analysis of video case studies). All lecture courses in the department’s academic disciplines are supported by original multimedia materials.

The faculty members of the department systematically improve their professional skills through continuing education courses and participate in international and national scientific and practical conferences and congresses. Between 2010 and 2020, department faculty published over 100 scientific papers in leading professional journals.

To strengthen the practical component of students’ education, the department regularly organizes field trips and introductory excursions to leading research institutions in Ukraine:

• the State Laboratory for Drug Quality Control at the State Institution “Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” and the Laboratory of Sanitary Microbiology and Disinfection at the State Institution “O.M. Marzeev Institute of Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”: students learn about the actual range of research on medical devices and disinfectants, quality management systems, and pharmacopoeial analysis methods.
• State Institution “Y.I. Kundiev Institute of Occupational Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”: the institution’s research topics are directly integrated into the content of the courses “Occupational Safety in the Industry,” “Fundamentals of Bioethics and Biosafety,” and “Hygiene and Ecology.” During these visits, students learn about the institution’s history and Academician Y.I. Kundiev’s contributions to global science, and they also visit the Center for Medical and Psychological Rehabilitation, where they examine state-of-the-art equipment and innovative methods for the rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainian servicemen.

The department’s areas of research include: contemporary issues in public health, hygiene, and ecology; and the development of professional competencies among future physicians through the study of microbiology, virology, and immunology.

 Department staff are working on the following research project: “Theoretical and Methodological Foundations for Training Specialists in Public Health at Higher Medical Educational Institutions,” State Registration No. 0122U200606, and “Conceptual Foundations of Healthcare Facility Management in the Context of Healthcare System Reform,” State Registration No. 0126U001267.

As a result of the research projects carried out by the department’s staff over the past 5 years, more than 100 articles, papers, and abstracts have been published, including in professional and scientometric databases such as Scopus and WoS.

Based on the results of this work, the following elective educational courses have been developed and implemented: the course “E-HEALTH (Inpatient Care, Secondary Care),” the course “E-HEALTH (Outpatient Care),” the course “Medical Electronic Systems (Family Medicine),” and the course “Medical Electronic Systems in Dentistry: E-HEALTH in Dentistry.”

The department’s faculty members teach the educational modules “Patient Safety: WHO Recommendations” and “Fundamentals of Working in an Electronic Health Care System (E_HEALTH)” as part of the training program for interns.

The department’s faculty members teach the courses “Bioethics,” “Evidence-Based Medicine,” “Methodology of Scientific and Patent Research,” and “Statistical Methods for Processing and Analyzing Research Results” for doctoral candidates (PhD).

The department is home to the active student research societies “Management and Public Health” (research advisor: E.M. Kryvenko, Ph.D. in Medical Sciences, associate professor) and “Medical Microbiology” (supervised by L.S. Tserkovnyak, Ph.D. in Biology, Associate Professor), and the “Hygiene and Ecology” club, which holds monthly webinars (supervised by O.L. Kyrylenko, Senior Lecturer). The operation of student research clubs provides students with the opportunity to acquire research skills, fosters the development of clinical thinking, and promotes creative personal growth.

Over the past 5 years, student members of the department’s research club have received diplomas and certificates at international and all-Ukrainian congresses, symposia, and conferences for young scientists and students, and have participated in student academic competitions.

When organizing the educational process at the Ukrainian Association of Traditional Medicine, Order № 46 of April 10, 1992, created two departments:

• general hygiene, ecology with a course of occupational diseases;
• microbiology, virology and immunology.

In 2007 the departments were merged.

From September 2019 to May 2026, the department was known as «Public Health and Microbiology».

Since June 2026, by the relevant Order of the University, the department was renamed into the «Department of Public Health and Management».

History of the Department of General Hygiene, Ecology, with a course of occupational diseases

The department was established in October 1992, the first head of the department was Professor Alexander Yavorovsky.

• since December 1, 1993 the department was headed by Andriy Musiyovych Shevchenko;
• since August 28, 1995 – Kozyarin Ivan Petrovich;
• since August 29, 2000 – Maslenko Oleksandra Oleksiivna,
• since 2000 – Yatsula Hryhoriy Stepanovych,
• since February 16, 2002 – Tsyganenko Oleh Ivanovych.

History of the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology

The Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology was established in 1992. The department was headed by Yakymenko Anatoliy Ivanovych.

• since 1994 the head of the department was Larionov Georgy Mikhailovich,
• since1998 Blagodatny Volodymyr Mykolayovych,
• since1999 Blokhina Olena Vasylivna,
• since2007 the head of the department was Professor Kurilo Serhiy Mykolayovych.

In 2007, the Departments of «General Hygiene, Ecology with a course of occupational diseases» and «Мicrobiology, virology and immunology» were merged and renamed into the «Department of General Hygiene, Social Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology», headed by Kurylo Serhiy.

Since 24.01.2014 to September 2015, the head of the department was Doctor of Medical Science, Professor Meged Volodymyr.

Since 01.09.2015 to 29.08.2017 the head of the department was PhD “Medical Science”,  an associate professor Slobodkin Valery.

Since 30.08.2017 till nowdays, the head of the department is Doctor of Biological Science, Professor, Baieva Olena.
