Surgical training in full swing: Kyiv Medical University students deepen their expertise in Germany

The clinical training of Kyiv Medical University students participating in the German-Ukrainian Surgical Summer School 2026 in Germany is continuing successfully. Alongside their work in clinical departments and participation in surgical procedures, the program participants are actively engaged in the academic component of the internship, which includes specialized seminars and masterclasses delivered by leading experts from University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH).

One of these educational sessions was conducted by Dr. Stephan Deichmann, a visceral surgeon, specialist in pancreatic cancer surgery, and consultant at the Department of Visceral Surgery.

During the seminar, students explored current approaches to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of pancreatic head tumors. Following the theoretical presentation, participants analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans from real clinical cases, learning how to assess vascular anatomy, identify vascular invasion, determine tumor resectability, and select the most appropriate surgical strategy.

Particular attention was devoted to preoperative planning. Dr. Deichmann presented his own structured approach to preparing for pancreaticoduodenectomy, explaining in detail which anatomical features, vascular variations, and potential risks should be carefully evaluated before surgery. This systematic approach represents an essential component of modern surgical practice, as it enhances procedural safety and contributes to more predictable outcomes for patients.

Participation in academic activities of this kind enables Kyiv Medical University students to strengthen their clinical reasoning, gain insight into internationally recognized surgical approaches, and learn directly from the experience of leading European specialists.
