President of Kyiv Medical University, Oleksandr Pokanevych, Selected for WHO Alliance Project Team

Kyiv Medical University announces:

The University’s President, Oleksandr Pokanevych, MD, MPH, MS, has joined an international research team selected to participate in a project organized by the WHO Alliance. The team was formed by Kyiv Medical University in cooperation with Ukrainian experts, as well as colleagues from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the University of Edinburgh, and international organizations, including Health System Global.

This highly important project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of legal and governance interventions in the health sector, identify the next steps to address workforce challenges, and ensure the recovery of the system.

Russia’s full-scale invasion has dealt a serious blow to Ukraine’s health system. Despite this, it has shown remarkable resilience. The greatest burden has fallen on health workers, who continue to serve under extremely difficult conditions — working under shelling and facing an acute shortage of personnel.

Health sector reforms, including healthcare financing, the development of primary care, and decentralization, have been crucial in ensuring that Ukrainians retained access to medical care even during wartime. However, today more than ever, a deep and honest analysis is needed — to assess how effective these measures truly are and to determine the necessary steps to enable recovery and sustainable development of the health system.

The project, with the participation of Kyiv Medical University’s team led by its President Oleksandr Pokanevych, MD, MPH, MS, is expected to become an important tool for the future of Ukraine’s health system.

We work for Ukraine, for our people, for our victory 🇺🇦💙💛
