Mini-conference on dental implantology and bone regeneration. A professional dialogue between education and clinical practice

On February 2, 2026, a Mini-conference on dental implantology and bone regeneration was held at the Polish Campus of Kyiv Medical University in Katowice. This educational and practical event brought together students, academic staff, and practicing specialists to explore contemporary approaches to surgical dentistry and regenerative medicine.

The event was officially opened by Oleksandr Pokanevych, president of Kyiv Medical University, who, in his opening remarks, emphasized the strategic importance of integrating academic education with hands-on clinical experience from the early stages of medical training. He also highlighted the role of international educational standards in shaping a competitive and globally oriented medical professional.

The central highlight of the conference was the inaugural lecture by prof. Patrick Kownacki, MD, PhD, a specialist in surgical and implant dentistry, a graduate of postgraduate programs at Goethe University Frankfurt and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, a long-standing lecturer and Associate Professor at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, and an author of internationally recognized scientific publications.

The lecture, “Introduction to implant surgery and bone regeneration,” focused on:

  • the biological foundations of bone tissue regeneration and osseointegration;

  • clinical reasoning and treatment planning in implant dentistry;

  • patient selection criteria and clinical risk assessment;

  • modern bone augmentation techniques, including sinus lift procedures, guided bone regeneration (GBR), and the use of autogenous grafts and biomaterials.

The lecture had a strong practical orientation and established a solid theoretical framework for understanding healing processes, tissue regeneration, and clinical decision-making in modern implantology.

Following the lecture, a Q&A session was held, during which students had the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker, discuss real clinical cases, and explore professional development pathways in surgical dentistry.

The second part of the event was dedicated to a preclinical hands-on workshop, conducted as an intensive training session titled “My first implant.”

The practical session was led by experts from BioHorizons Camlog Group:

  • Piotr Szuba, Product & Training Manager;

  • Kamil Jaczkiewicz, Territory Manager.

Participants were introduced to modern implant systems, fundamental surgical protocols, instrumentation, and principles of clinical workflow in accordance with international standards.

The mini-conference was designed not only for dental students but also for students of other medical specialties who seek a deeper understanding of:

  • tissue regeneration processes;

  • surgical thinking;

  • principles of treatment planning;

  • interdisciplinary approaches in modern medicine.

The event served as a clear example of effective integration of theory and practice within university-level medical education.

The administration of the Polish Campus of Kyiv Medical University expresses its sincere gratitude to:

  • Oleksandr Pokanevych, president of KMU — for supporting the development of modern educational formats;

  • prof. Patrick Kownacki, MD, PhD — for his high level of academic expertise and an insightful lecture;

  • BioHorizons Camlog Group — for their partnership and support of the event;

  • Piotr Szuba and Kamil Jaczkiewicz — for their professional guidance during the practical workshop;

  • all participating students — for their engagement, enthusiasm, and commitment to professional growth.

The Mini-conference on dental implantology and bone regeneration marked another important step toward shaping a new generation of physicians who think globally, act responsibly, and are educated in accordance with the standards of the world’s leading universities.
