Kyiv Medical University hosted an online lecture by Prof. Dr. Joaquín Cayón de las Cuevas “Patients’ Rights in the Era of AI: Challenges and Concerns”

KMU Voices continues to bring together leading international experts and the Ukrainian academic community to discuss the most pressing challenges in modern medicine and law.

On June 9, 2026, Kyiv Medical University hosted an online lecture by Prof. Dr. Joaquín Cayón de las Cuevas, one of Europe’s leading experts in health law and bioethics, Professor of Health Law at the University of Cantabria (Spain), Director of the Health Law and Bioethics Research Group at IDIVAL, and President of the Executive Board of the Ibero-American Health Law Network.

The lecture, entitled “Patients’ Rights in the Era of AI: Challenges and Concerns,” attracted the attention of students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals, as the rapid development of artificial intelligence is already transforming healthcare delivery and raising new legal and ethical questions.

During the lecture, participants explored:

  • how artificial intelligence is influencing patients’ rights and medical practice;
  • the ethical and legal challenges associated with the digital transformation of healthcare;
  • approaches to ensuring data protection and informed consent in the digital environment;
  • the opportunities and risks that AI presents for the future of medicine, health law, and bioethics.

A particularly valuable aspect of the lecture was Professor Joaquín Cayón de las Cuevas international perspective. He shared practical examples of AI regulation in healthcare across different countries and outlined key trends that are likely to shape this field in the coming years.

The event was made possible through the cooperation between Kyiv Medical University and the European Association of Health Law (EAHL). KMU is currently the only university in Ukraine that has an official partnership agreement with the Association.

Thanks to the involvement of the Continuing Professional Development provider Yuston Info, the lecture was accessible not only to KMU students and faculty members but also to a broader academic and professional audience. The online broadcast provided open access to international expertise and enabled participants from across Ukraine to engage in discussions on contemporary issues in health law, bioethics, and digital medicine.

The KMU Voices initiative continues to serve as a platform for international dialogue, bringing global expertise, innovative ideas, and contemporary perspectives to students, educators, healthcare professionals, and researchers.

The lecture once again demonstrated that the future of healthcare cannot be imagined without interdisciplinary dialogue among physicians, legal professionals, researchers, and technology developers.
