Department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery
Oleksiy Oleksandrovich Timofieiev – Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in Maxillofacial Surgery, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, President of the Ukrainian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons and of dental surgeons, deputy general director of the International Biographical Center (Cambridge, England (DDG)), DG (American Biographical Institute, North Carolina, USA), member of the European and International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons. In 2000, he was awarded the diploma “For Achievements in the 20th Century” (Great Britain). Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (2002). By decree of the President of Ukraine, he was awarded the Order of Merit III degree (2008). Person of the Year – 2009 (according to ABI, USA). Awarded with a diploma of the Presidium of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (2005), the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine – “Petro Mohyla” badge (2008), honorary diplomas of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (2002, 2005, 2009) and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (2010), a gold medal and a diploma “For merit” by the European Chamber of Science and Industry (Belgium, 2013).).
• Maksymcha Serhiy Vasyliovych – associate professor of the department, Doctor of Medicine, associate professor. In 2000, he graduated from the Ukrainian Medical and Dentistry Academy, majoring in Dentistry. From 2001 to 2003, he completed a clinical residency in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”. From 2003 to the present, he works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. In 2007, he defended his thesis on the topic: “Justification of the use of hyposensitizing therapy in patients with fractures of the lower jaw” and received the degree of candidate of medical sciences. In 2008, he received the academic title of associate professor. He has a higher qualification category in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”. Member of the editorial board of the professional journal “Journal of Diagnostics and Treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology”;
• Yaryfa Maria Oleksiivna – associate professor of the department, candidate of medical sciences. In 2001, she graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. From 2009 to 2011, she studied at a clinical residency in Orthopedic Dentistry. From 2011 to the present, she works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. In 2012, she defended her dissertation on the topic: “Prediction and prevention of complications during prosthetics with fixed dentures, fixed on teeth and dental implants” and received the degree of candidate of medical sciences. Has a higher qualification category in the specialty “Orthopedic dentistry”;
• Fesenko Yevgeny Ihorovych – associate professor of the department, candidate of medical sciences. In 2010, he graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. From 2015 to 2018, he studied at the correspondence postgraduate course at the department of maxillofacial surgery of P.L. Shupyka. From 2016 to the present, he works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. In 2018, he defended his thesis on the topic: “Features of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of inflammatory complications in non-inflammatory fractures of the lower jaw” and received the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. He has the second qualification category in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”. Responsible editor of the professional journal “Journal of Diagnostics and Treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology”
• Kryvosheeva Anna Igorivna – assistant of the department, candidate of medical sciences. In 2007, she graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. Since 2009, she has been working at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. In 2016, she defended her dissertation on the topic: “Features of the clinical course, treatment and prevention of complications in patients after surgical interventions on the parotid and submandibular glands” and received the degree of candidate of medical sciences. Has the first qualification category in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”;
• Ukharska Oksana Anatolyivna – assistant of the department, master’s degree. In 1998, she graduated from the Medical Institute of the Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine, majoring in Dentistry. From 2003 to the present, she works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. In 2015, she defended her master’s thesis “Prevention of purulent-inflammatory complications in patients with benign tumors and tumor-like formations of the jaws”. Has a higher qualification category in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”;
• Kuznetzova Nataliya Ihorivna – assistant of the department. In 1999, she graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. From 2016 to the present, she works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. In 2017, she specialized in “Therapeutic Dentistry”;
• Myroshnyk Anton Olexandrovych – assistant of the department. In 2017, he graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. In 2019, he completed a specialization in “Surgical Dentistry” at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of P.L. Shupyka. From 2017 to the present, he works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University;
• Ripa Viktoriia Mykolayivna – assistant of the department. In 2019, she graduated from VNMU named after M.I. Pirogov, majoring in Dentistry. In 2021, she completed a specialization in “Surgical Dentistry” at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of P.L. Shupyka. From 2021 to the present, she works at the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical University;
• Havlytiuk Diana Serhiyivna – assistant of the department. In 2019, she graduated from VNMU named after M.I. Pirogov, majoring in Dentistry. In 2021, she completed a specialization in “Surgical Dentistry” at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of P.L. Shupyka. From 2021 to the present, she works at the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical University;
• Kolisnichenko Lesya Anatolyivna – assistant of the department. In 2017, she graduated from Kyiv Medical University with a specialty in Dentistry. In 2019, she completed a specialization in “Surgical Dentistry” at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of P.L. Shupyka. From 2017 to the present, she works at the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical University;
• Marta Andriivna Sokolyuk – assistant of the department. In 2017, she graduated from O.O. Bogomolets, specialty “Dentistry”. In 2020, she specialized in “Surgical Dentistry” at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy. From 2021 to the present, she works at the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical University.
• Serga Olena Oleksandrivna – headmaster of the department. In 2003, she graduated from the Medical Institute of the Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine, majoring in Dentistry. From 2005 to the present, she works at the department of surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of Kyiv Medical University. Has the second qualification category in the specialty “Surgical Dentistry”;
The department teaches the subjects “Surgical Dentistry” and “Pediatric Surgical Dentistry” to students of the 3rd-5th year of the Faculty of Dentistry, “Fundamentals of Dentistry” to students of the 5th year of the Faculty of Medicine, including English-speaking students. Postgraduate training in the course “Surgical Dentistry” is conducted.
Material and technical equipment of the department meets the standards and requirements for departments of higher education institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation. The scientific work of the department today is aimed at “Features of diagnosis, clinical course, treatment and prevention of complications in patients with benign tumors and tumor-like formations of the jaws and soft tissues” (initiative research topic, state registration number 0117U002463, execution period 2017-2021 years).
Over the past 10 years, teachers of the department have published more than 365 articles in professional journals, made 95 reports at scientific conferences of various levels, and received 12 patents. Under the leadership of the head of the department, Professor Oleksiy Oleksandrovich Timofeev, the department prepared: 1 doctor of science, 9 candidates of science and 5 masters.
Treatment work
The department carries out treatment work in the maxillofacial department No. 1 of the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 12, where employees of the department provide medical and advisory assistance to about 1,500 patients a year. Employees of the department diagnose and treat the main surgical dental diseases of the maxillofacial area and neck and their complications:
– inflammatory diseases
– post-traumatic injuries
– benign tumors and tumor-like formations
– non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands
– facial nerve diseases
– congenital and acquired defects and deformations
Employees of the department perform the most complex surgical interventions in the maxillofacial area.
The Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyiv Medical University was established in 1992. From 1992 to 1998, the head of the department was candidate of medical sciences, associate professor Myron Lvovich Zakson. From 1998 to the present, the department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Professor Oleksiy Oleksandrovich Timofeev.
Students of the medical and dental faculties, interns and dentists are trained at the department. The following disciplines are taught: surgical dentistry, children’s surgical dentistry and the basics of dentistry.
In addition to theoretical (lecture) classes conducted by professors and associate professors of the department, students undergo practical training under the guidance of the department’s teachers, studying the provision of surgical dental care to the population, both in outpatient and inpatient settings. Students have the opportunity to participate in the process of treating a patient, starting from the diagnosis of the disease to the clinical recovery of the patient. During classes, students work in examination rooms, where consultation and diagnosis of diseases are carried out, operating rooms – where the surgical stage of treatment is carried out, in dressing rooms – where the course of the postoperative period is monitored. Employees of the department perform all types of surgical interventions in the maxillofacial area, from tooth extraction to emergency surgical interventions for life-threatening inflammatory processes, face and neck tumor removal, reconstructive surgery after jaw tumor removal, and facial defects and deformities.
Professor Timofeev O.O. founded the scientific school of maxillofacial surgery. Under the leadership of Professor Timofeev O.O. 44 PhD theses were defended, both in Ukraine and abroad. In addition, five of his students received the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences – Professor Lisova I.H. (Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, Head of Department), Professor Mirza O.I. (Institute of Ecology, Kyiv), Professor Barilo O.S. (Vinnytsia National Medical University), professor O.P. Viesova (Shupyk National Medical Academy), professor N.O. Ushko (Shupyk National Medical Academy).
Professor Timofeev O.O. is the author of more than 700 scientific works, 44 patents, as well as 20 textbooks, monographs and educational aids, in particular: “Purulent surgery of the maxillofacial area and neck” (Kyiv, 1995); “Basics of the Maxillofacial Surgery” (Moscow, 2007); “Surgical methods of dental implantation” (Kyiv, 2007); “Salivary gland diseases” (Lviv, 2007); “Maxillofacial surgery”; (Kyiv, 2010, 2017), “Maxillofacial surgery” (Kyiv, 2010, 2015). “Galvanic pathology in dentistry” (co-authored, Kyiv, 2014), “Aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery of the maxillofacial area and neck” (in Georgian, Georgia, Tbilisi, 2014), “Anesthesia in oral and maxillofacial surgery” (in English, authors: Timofeev O.O., Fesenko E.I., Kyiv, 2016). The textbook “Manual of maxillofacial surgery and surgical dentistry” (Kyiv, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2012) which has five editions and was awarded a diploma of the Presidium of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. In 2019, the sixth edition of this textbook was published.
