Department of infectious diseases, phthisiology and dermatovenerology

Lectures, practical classes and patient supervision are being held at the department for students of the 4th, 5th and 6th years of the medical faculty and the faculty for with foreign students, as well as the 4th year of the dental faculty.

The structure of the department includes the following academic disciplines:

– Phthisiology;

– Pulmonology;

– Infectious lung diseases;

– Infectious diseases;

– Dermatology and venereology.

Since 2000, post-graduate training of intern doctors has been carried out in the following specialties: infectious diseases, phthisiology and pulmonology, dermatology and venereology (203 intern doctors, 8 clinical residents have been trained, and since 2004 – 32 masters of medicine).

Syllabuses, methodological guidelines, curriculums for students and teachers were made in Ukrainian and English languages to help students master study programs in all academic disciplines. Three textbooks and 5 study guides were published. The latest study guide “Phthisiology” – in 2022.

The main scientific interests of the department’s employees are: research of comorbid diseases and conditions – tuberculosis and HIV infection, tuberculosis and alcoholism, tuberculosis and motherhood, the risk of infection and the risk of tuberculosis in students among young people and children, clinical and experimental research of the antimycobacterial activity of modern antimycobacterial drugs and traditional medicine; features of detection, diagnosis and treatment of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, community-acquired pneumonia, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted diseases.

2 doctoral, 13 candidate and 32 master’s theses have been defended under the leadership of the department’s staff over past 15 years; employees of the department defended 5 candidate theses and one doctorate (Professor V.S. Topolnytskyi). 3 monographs, 13 methodological recommendations and interdepartmental instructions, 3 standards and protocols for the treatment and examination of patients, 12 patents, copyright certificates for inventions, more than 280 scientific works in Ukrainian and foreign publications were prepared and published on the materials of scientific works during the period of the department’s existence.

A special place in the scientific work is taken by the scientific research of the department, for example, a research center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on international multi-center scientific programs to study the effectiveness and tolerability of new drugs in pulmonology, in phthisiology and for the treatment of viral hepatitis. During all 20 years of these studies, the Center is headed by Professor V.P. Melnyk, who cooperates with scientists from more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.

Employees of the department visited 27 countries of the world for trainings on scientific programs.

Clinical work

Employees of the department work in more than 10 hospitals, polyclinics and scientific institutions of Kyiv, including the Institute of Infectious Diseases of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the hospital and the central polyclinic of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the pre-trial detention center. Professor Panasyuk O.V. is the chief consultant on tuberculosis of the National Center for Tuberculosis and for more than 20 years was a leading consultant on sanitary aviation – a member of the expert group of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine for the review of works submitted for awards of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. 

Most of the teachers of the department have a higher qualification category in specialties: phthisiology, pulmonology, infectious diseases, dermatology and venereology. The teachers of the department consult and treat patients every day, thousands of whom are grateful for the humane, sensitive and highly professional attitude to restore their health, and often return to life.

The department was organized in 1996 year, on the basis of Tuberculosis Hospital №1 of Kyiv and KMKL №9. It was organized and headed until nowadays by Doctor of Medicine, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, Professor Melnyk V.P.

The first teachers were:

  • Phthisiology and pulmonology – since 1996 it has been headed by Doctor of Medicine, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, Professor Melnyk V.P.; Doctor of Medicine, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, professor O. V. Panasyuk (professor of the department from 1996 to the present); PhD, associate professor Panasyuk V.O. (from 1996 to 2012); PhD, associate professor Yefimenko L.V. (from 2006 to 2013); PhD, associate professor Sadomova-Andrianova G.V. (associate professor of the department from 2007 to 2022);
  • Infectious diseases – from 1997 to 2006 was headed by PhD, associate professor V.P. Galuzynskyi, and since 2006 to nowadays – headed by doctor of medicine, professor V.S. Topolnytskyi;
  • Dermatology and venereology – from 1996 to 2015 was headed by PhD, associate professor M.M. Shupenko, from 2015 to 2016 – by doctor of medicine, Professor I.M. Romanenko, from September 1, 2016 – is headed by a PhD, associate professor Bilousova I.V, university graduate; doctor of medicine, Professor E. L. Barkalova (professor of the department from 2017 to the present); PhD, associate professor L.A. Derevyanko (from 2016 to the present) (chief pediatric dermatologist of Ukraine).
