The Department of Anatomy, Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery was established in 1992 as a structural unit of the Medical Institute of the Ukrainian Association of Traditional Medicine.

The first head and founder of the department was Volodymyr Talko, MD, who actively formed the educational and methodological base and teaching staff of the department.

On the initiative of Professor V.I. Talko in 1993, some classes began to be held at the Department of Normal Anatomy of the Bogomolets State Medical Institute in Kyiv.

However, since 1996, the Department has been operating on the basis of the pathological anatomy department of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Kyiv. Kyiv.

Initially, the teaching staff of the Department consisted mainly of part-time employees. In particular, the Department of Anatomy was taught by the staff of the Bogomolets Kyiv State Medical University – Professors I.I.Bobryk, V.G.Cherkasov, S.M.Stetsenko, Doctors of Medicine S.T.Chernokulsky, O.O.Shevchenko, Associate Professors O.Z.Seminog, A.M.Synitska, L.M.Solovyova, Candidate of Medicine M.G.Fedosenko, and Senior Lecturer R.D. Shadlun; Kyiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians – Professor M.I. Symorot, Doctor of Medicine D.L. Horbatiuk, Associate Professors V.A. Gudzenko, M.O. Marei, P.S. Kryzyna, Candidates of Medicine I.M. Pervak and I.M. Leonenko; Kyiv Institute of Physical Culture and Sports – Associate Professor O.I. Novokhatskyi, Kyiv Regional Forensic Medicine – Associate Professor A.T. Yurchenko.

Such productive cooperation with other educational and scientific institutions contributed to the introduction of the best practices of higher education institutions of the capital of Ukraine into the educational process of the Department of Anatomy.

Subsequently, the teaching staff of the Department consists only of full-time employees: Head of the Department, Doctor of Medicine, Professor V.I. Talko, Doctor of Medicine, Professor L.M. Davydenko, Candidates of Medicine, Associate Professors Y.O. Bolhov, I.M. Leonenko, A.I. Parakhin.

Currently, the Department has a modern teaching and methodological base: more than 300 anatomical models, 2 interactive whiteboards with professional licensed 3D virtual anatomical software ‘Organon Anatomy’, more than 50 anatomical bas-reliefs, more than 200 modern anatomical tables in Ukrainian and English, more than 150 anatomical specimens fixed with formalin and preserved in glass containers in the Department’s museum.

Teachers of the Department conduct lectures and practical classes for students of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in Ukrainian (classroom) and English (online) forms of education.

The largest number of classroom hours (from 12 to 14 credits) is allocated to the fundamental discipline of Human Anatomy. During the practical classes, students have the opportunity to attend autopsies 1-2 times a semester at the pathology department of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Kyiv. Kyiv, where our department is located.

To assist students in mastering the curricula for all disciplines and elective courses, syllabuses, curricula, methodological developments, recommendations and instructions for students and teachers in Ukrainian and English have been created and are constantly updated and posted on the department’s website. Teachers of the department have published 3 textbooks, 4 manuals, workbooks on all sections of human anatomy.

The structure of the Department, in addition to human anatomy, also includes the disciplines of topographic anatomy and operative surgery and clinical anatomy, which until 2015 was headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor Kryzyna P.S.; from 2015 to 2024 these disciplines were taught by Candidate of Medicine, Associate Professor Radomska N.Y., and from 2024 – by the Assistant Professor Yevtushenko V.V., who also heads the student scientific club of the Department ‘Anatomy club’. At the meetings of the scientific club, students learn the rules of working with surgical instruments, practice techniques for forming a surgical knot and basic operating skills on simulators, and prepare scientific reports on clinical anatomy.

Over the past three years, the Department’s faculty (including several clinicians) have been systematically preparing students for the Krok-1 unified state qualification exam in the form of additional lectures and practical classes in all sections of human anatomy. As a result of this work, the success rate of our university students in passing the Krok-1 exam in human anatomy has significantly improved.

Since February 2016, the department has been staffed by Associate Professors Kovalchuk N.V. and Kerechanyn I.V., and since 2018 – by Associate Professors Sankova L.Y. and Shmargalev A.A.

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department at present: Head of the Department, Associate Professor Kovalchuk N.V., Head of the Department, Associate Professor Mykhailyuk M.M., assistants: A.O. Parakhin, V.V. Yevtushenko, I.M. Leonenko, A.V. Grubskyi, O.B. Sadovyi.

As the medieval anatomist Andrew Vesalius said: ‘Anatomy is the pedestal and foundation of the art of medicine’. And another famous doctor believed that ‘A doctor cannot perform his duty without knowing anatomy’.For more than 30 years, the Department has been recognised as one of the best among the departments of fundamental medical and biological disciplines of the University. The first pages of the history of the department testify not only to its significant achievements in a relatively short time, but also to the great creative potential that can and should work for further development and improvement of work in the field of training highly qualified medical personnel for Ukraine and for foreign countries.
