Our History

Kyiv Medical University is the best private university (according to the Rankings-2019). Over 3900 people, 700 of which are interns, are studying here. About 35% of the contingent consists of international students from 62 countries of the world.

The University was founded by Valerii Pokanevych (1950-2012) — Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, General Directorof the Ukrainian Association of Traditional Medicine, Chief Freelance Specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in “Folk and Alternative Medicine”.

Valerii was at the origins of building a system of human resources in the field of folk and alternative medicine of Ukraine. Thanks to his initiative and participation in 1998, the “Doctor of Folk and Alternative Medicine” specialty was launched and included in the list of medical positions in health care facilities.

In 1992, Valerii Pokanevych established Kyiv Medical University. Its work was based on the need to introduce the most effective, scientifically sound methods and tools of folk and alternative medicine to the complex therapy of diseases in the system of the Ukrainian medical institutions. The implementation of this concept is reflected in the functioning and development of a new type of higher medical educational establishment, where today’s education is a combination of the principles of both classical and folk and alternative medicine – something V.Pokanevych dreamed of so much.

The University trains specialists in the field of 22 “Health Care” training at the following faculties: Medical (222 “Medicine” specialty; term of study – 6 years; form of study – full-time), Dental (221 “Dentistry” specialty; term of study – 5 years; form of study – full-time), and Pharmaceutical (226 “Pharmacy, Industrial Pharmacy ” specialty; forms of study – full-time and part-time; terms of study – 5 and 5.5 years, respectively).

The training takes place in 22 departments, 14 of which are clinical, located in the best communal governmental and private hospitals. Postgraduate education: Internship – 23 specialties, 3 educational and scientific programs in PhD, 11 specialties in Clinical Residency and Doctorate program is available in most of the healthcare specialties. The University has its own modern dental clinic — Dental Center “UNIVERSITETSKIY”. In 2017 KMU opened its branch «Kharkiv Institute of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences», in 2019 KMU opened its branch «Dnipro Institute of Medicine and Public Health»
